Talent showcased at Stars of Tomorrow

The Kiwanis Club of Carson Valley will host its ninth annual Stars of Tomorrow talent competition on Saturday. A silent auction begins at 6 p.m. with the talent competition starting at 7 p.m. at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School in the Gardnerville Ranchos.

Thirteen local high school aged vocalists, dancers and instrumentalists will compete for scholarship prizes. The $1,250 Gene Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship is the first prize. Other scholarships are $750 for second and $500 for third. A $250 people's choice award will also be given. Sponsors include the Kiwanis Club of Carson Valley, Maxton Manufacturing, ReMax, Carson Valley Medical Center, Byron Waite of MTM Capital Services and Delahay Appraisal.

Kat Simmons will return as emcee for the fifth year. Judges for the event include: Shirley Bierman, who has taught music in Carson City for more than 38 years; Staci Dunlap, who teaches at Dance Spirit in Carson City; and Frank Bliss, who has played violin for the Amsterdam Philharmonic.

While the judges tabulate scores, the audience will be entertained by several performers including Rachel Jackson, the 2006 first-place winner; Bree Norton, the second-place winner in South Lake Tahoe's 2007 Stars of Tomorrow competition; and four students who are not yet old enough to compete.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children/students (through high school), or $30 per family. They are available from local Kiwanians and at the door. For further information call Ann Delahay at 783-0875.
