Pet care time

Most Antelope Valley residents have received their dog license renewal forms from Mono County. In this package, they let you know about the vaccination clinic that will take place at the Walker fire station 8:30-11:30 a.m. June 2. The cost is very reasonable for rabies vaccinations ($6), as well as any other shots your pet needs. You can accomplish the vaccinating and licensing at the same time. Deadline for licensing is June 30, so be sure to get them in to avoid the $20 late fee.

Weekend ahead

-- May 18 will be the Carbo-Load spaghetti dinner 6 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. You still have time to make reservations through the Chamber of Commerce at (530) 495-9666.

-- May 19 is the date of the Mountain Warfare Challenge Race at Pickel Meadows. The first 800 to enter have until May 16 to enter online at camppendletonraces.com or bridgeportbodie.org.

-- May 19 and 20 will be the fifth annual Walker Spring Fling, held on Highway 395 in Walker starting at 10 a.m. There will be all sorts of crafters and flea marketers, as well as food, music, bounce house, water and beer garden. In addition, a blood drive will take place both days from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call Sue at (530) 495-1802. This year's blood drive will also offer a free cholesterol screening for donors.

Seeking volunteers

A group of volunteers began cleanup of the local shooting range near Eastside and Topaz Lanes a week ago. They are planning on completing their project on Wednesday, May 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. They would appreciate any volunteers to help. Just bring gloves, trash containers and rakes. Call Sue at (530) 495-2119 for details.

Busy veterans

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3567 will be busy all through the Memorial Day holiday:

-- On May 26, 27 and 28, they will hold their annual yard sale at the Walker Mini Mall. They will gladly accept donations while they are there, or you can call Dieter at (530) 495-2149 or Frenchy at (530) 495-2132 to arrange for a donation to be made.

-- At 9 a.m. on May 30 at the Coleville Cemetery, the VFW will hold their annual Memorial Day ceremony. If you haven't been to it, you have missed something very stirring and patriotic.

Good fundraiser

-- In an effort to build their church, the local members of the Catholic community are holding a rummage sale and barbecue at the planned church site, 112775 Highway 395 in Coleville, just south of base housing. If you would like to make donations, either items or a check, contact either Rose at (888) 495-1066 or John Nygard at (530) 495-9589.

This and that

-- The Walker River Colorguard has been working very hard to get even better than they have been at their recent performances. They had an instructor come from the Fred J. Miller Clinic in the Midwest to power-tune their skills for a full weekend of training a couple of weeks ago. Their next performances will be at the Walker Spring Fling, the Mule Days parade May 25 in Bishop, and the July 4 parade in Bridgeport. Be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to see these kids in action.

-- The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce meetings have been moved back to the Walker Community Center on the second Monday of the month, 6:30 p.m.

-- The Antelope Valley Fire Commission will meet tonight 6 p.m. at the Walker fire station.

Mother's Day is this Sunday, so remember to be extra thoughtful to your mothers (and husbands, to your wives). Have a great day with your families.
