The Douglas High baseball team was hoping for the shot at simply hosting its own bracket through the Northern 4A Regional playoffs this week.
What it got instead, thanks in large part to a Carson victory over Damonte Ranch Friday afternoon, was a shot to host the playoffs all the way through the regional championship game this Saturday at 1 p.m.
Douglas clinched the Sierra League title with Carson's win and will host its bracket this week with games starting Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers will take on High Desert No. 4 seed Reed, a team that has beaten Douglas twice in non-league contests this season, in the playoff opener at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Each loss came by one run and in each game Douglas had a shot to win it in the last inning.
Damonte Ranch and McQueen will square off at 4 p.m. Tuesday to fill out the rest of the bracket. The winners of each game will play at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Douglas, while the losers will play Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Bishop Manogue hosts the other bracket, which includes the Miners, Galena, North Valleys and Carson.
The two bracket winners will meet up at Douglas Saturday at 1 p.m.
Bolstered by strong performances from its relay teams and exceptional depth in the individual events, the Douglas High School girls' swim team won the Zephyr League title Saturday.
Douglas scored a total of 372 points, ahead of South Tahoe (327), Reed (317), North Valleys (278), Manogue (243) and Lowry (193).
Cassie Parr, Haley Von Schottenstein, Katie O'Neill, the 200 free relay team, the 400 free relay team and the 200 medley relay squad each turned in top-three finishes in the meet.
The Douglas High School track and field team will be sending its largest contingent in recent years to the Northern 4A Regional Championships at Damonte Ranch this weekend.
The Tigers qualified athletes in 20 spots for the championships at last weekend's trials.
The girls team will be sending 12 entries to the championships while the boys are sending eight.
The top qualifier for the Tigers was sophomore Jessica Gorton, who will compete in the 100 high hurdles, the long jump and the triple jump. She will also take part in the 4x400 relay.
