Three local photographers got up close and personal to win this month's competition with the Carson Valley Photo Club. The challenge was to get super close-up photos using a technique known as "macro."

A vacation on the island of Hawaii landed Minden amateur photographer Pat Stanley, the club's vice president, a blue ribbon. His "macro" photo of the fiddlehead portion of a Hawaiian uluhe fern, which he titled "Fiddle Faddle," took first, and will be on display along with the second and third place winning entries at the Douglas County Public Library.

Second place went to Steve Noble for his close-up of a pearl of honey formed at the end of a needle.

Ray Moore won third place with his shot of a dandelion.

Guest speaker Dennis King of Gordon's Photo Service in Carson City traced modern advancements in photography, including the relatively new era of digital cameras.

The Carson Valley Photo Club, formed late last year, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Douglas County Library. The club also plans several photo field trips. For more information about the club, call president Dave Colon at (775) 783-8600.
