Baby boomers "coming out" party: Those who were teens and older in the 1960s should be interested to know that there are Summer of Love events going on all over the country this year to celebrate the 40th anniversary. "The 40th anniversary of what?" you may ask. I asked myself that, too, so I called my other half, since he is a little older (sorry Hon) and lived in the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco in the '60s. This is Jack Carrerow's description of the Summer of Love, the year, 1967:

"Counterculture ... It evolved from the beat generation. The phrase was 'peace, love and understanding,' 'make love not war.' It was a very calm, open period. It was socialistic because everybody was sharing everything. And the music was very good. The music, I think was the real lasting part of the whole thing. Obviously it's lasted because it's coming back. Well, the music never went away, but the fashions are coming back."

The 40th anniversary Summer of Love events in the Bay Area include: a Haight-Ashbury Street Fair on June 10; High on the Haight Walking Tour on June 30; Joydancer Summer Celebration of Love, July 27-29; Monterey Summer of Love Festival, July 28-29; Summer of Love 40th Anniversary at Speedway Meadow, Golden Gate Park, Sept. 2; and a Lovefest with a parade that starts at Second Street at Market and ends at the Civic Center Plaza on Sept. 29. Entertainment at Sharkey's

At Sharkey's Casino, 1440 Highway 395, Gardnerville, entertaining in the Horseshoe Bar tonight and Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight will be Robin Turley. Turley entertains with a variety of music from pop rock and classic rock styles, to country.

Following up on May 25 and 26 will be Brian Lester. Both Turley and Lester are repeat performers at Sharkey's.

The Bank's got the Solution

Today - Come enjoy a light dinner, drinks, and the sounds of Howard Coleman 6:30-10:30 p.m. today at The Bank Parlor & Pub. Sing along with classics by James Taylor, Neil Young, Beatles, Lyle Lovett, and many other country, folk and blues tunes. Coleman, a school teacher by daytime, plays guitar, harmonica and sings. He has performed at Nelson's, the Wolfcreek Inn, in addition to monthly at The Bank. "Invite your friends and have a good time," said Coleman.

Saturday - Tony Sanders is back at The Bank. Come listen to music from the 50's through the present from 5-9 p.m. Tony will be playing his special blend of rockabilly, country, folk and rock and roll favorites from his vast repertoire. From The Beatles to the stones, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Willie & Waylon to Neil Diamond and Greenday and lots more.

New on Thursdays - The Bank now has open mic night. Hosted by Dean Brownell. Dean has exceptional talent and he plays a variety of instruments including rhythm and lead guitar, keyboards, bass guitar and congas and is both a lead and a backup singer. The Hot Two at Eddy Street

Musicians Chris Bayer and Gary Lyon are The Hot Two. They will perform at the Eddy Street Book Exchange on Saturday at 7 p.m. They play a variety of musical instruments including guitar, drums, harmonica and cowbell.

"They do the old tunes, the new tunes, the cool tunes and the hot tunes," said book store owner Linda Finch.

From a long line of saloon singers and tramp acts, Bayer has written dozens of original songs. He loves the old standards. He plays harmonica and guitar at the same time. He flat-picks and finger-picks the archtop. He has traveled the West for 40 years appearing around campfires, at mine openings, for street fairs and at wakes.

Lyon grew up under a bar stool at the Silver Stope in Virginia City, listening to big band musicians on their off nights. An unreconstructed professor of foot-stomping barrel house rhythms, he remembers when the Comstock was a haven for jazz traditionalists.

Music is always Inn

Street Heart performs through May 20, Radio Rage appears May 22-27 and various duos entertain on Monday nights. Cabaret Lounge live entertainment is presented with no cover and no minimum. The 45-minute shows start at 7:30, 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 and 11:30 p.m.

Street Heart covers a musical landscape with the bulk of their material vocally oriented, '60s-'90s classic rock 'n' roll. Based in San Diego, and perennial San Diego Music Awards finalists, the group has been entertaining since 1987.

Radio Rage offers a complete spectrum of musical styles as they perform a diversity of male and female hits from classic rock to modern rock and R&B to disco and current hip-hop/pop. Radio Rage members have performed with internationally known artists such as Michael Bolton, Rick Springfield, Sammy Hagar, Jonathan Cain, David Foster, The Divinyls and more.

Villa After Dark

Jazz entertainer David Jobe will appear Saturday night at Villa san Marcel. Live jazz music will be performed during dinner. Dinners, Italian cuisine, are served starting at 5 p.m. and entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m.

Villa san Marcel features The After Dark Ultra Lounge 10 p.m. to closing on Fridays. Dance the night away or simply relax in a tranquil atmosphere.

The Eddy Street Book Exchange offers an acoustic jam session 2:30-5 p.m. Sunday. If you play any kind of acoustic instrument, join them for a song and some good company. Folks who don't play, but who may want to sing along or just listen, are also welcome. All levels of experience are welcome. If you would like to play and have some songs you'd like to share, bring a few copies of the lyrics, chords or tab sheets.

Two trios at Walley's

Every Wednesday and Thursday night music can be heard while dining at David Walley's Resort, Hot Springs and Spa, 2001 Foothill Road, Genoa.

-- The Big Tsunami plays every Wednesday, 6-9 p.m. at Walley's. The Big Tsunami performs island, contemporary and traditional music, as well as local standards.

-- On Thursdays from 5:30-9 p.m. the Red Davidson Trio performs on bass, drums and piano.

"We play mainstream jazz for the most part," said bass player Tim Goldsmith. "It's very listenable - you don't have to be a jazz expert to enjoy it."

Martin Garry of Garry's Mobile Music will be the disc jockey at Minden Village's 88 Cups Pavilion on May 25. Music and entertainment will start at 7 p.m. Bring lawn chairs, tables, food and drink or visit one of the Village's restaurants and be ready to join in or enjoy watching karaoke. Free ukulele lessons for young musicians

This summer free ukulele lessons will be offered at the Eddy Street Book Exchange by local musician David Smith. Musicians 8 to 14 are welcome. The lessons will start in June and will be held on Sunday afternoon. There will be a $20 charge for a ukulele and music materials. The lessons will be free. Call 782-5484 for more information.

Summer concerts begin

The line-up for the free Summer Concert Series at Minden Park includes: Hotel California "A Salute to the Eagles" on May 25; the Comstock Cowboys on July 13; the Jeff Jones Band on July 27; the John Jorgenson Quintet on Aug. 10; and the Michael Powers Band on Aug. 24.

The Concerts in the Park, presented by the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department, are from 6:30-8:30 p.m., with the exception of the last concert, the Michael Powers Band, which will perform from 6-8 p.m.

The Minden/Douglas Elks Lodge No. 2670 will provide food and non-alcoholic beverages for sale, but many families like to bring their own picnic dinners. For more information, call the parks and recreation department at 782-9828.

Evening at the Comstock

The annual charity dinner, live/silent auction and concert to benefit children with autism, An Evening on the Comstock, will take place on Aug. 4 at Buffalo Creek Ranch, 319 Jones Lane, Gardnerville. The event features music by David John and the Comstock Cowboys.
