Douglas freshman Thomas Wicker stood in 42nd place after the first day of the Nevada 4A State Golf Championships at Somersett Country Club in Reno Monday.

Wicker shot a twin 45s for a one-day total of 90, which was the second best performance by a freshman at the tournament on the first day.

"The course was playing extremely tough," Douglas coach Brent Eddy said. "Thomas did not play as well as he would have liked, but the experience of a state tourney is invaluable."

Carson led the team competition by two strokes after day one, followed by Palo Verde, Bishop Gorman, Spanish Springs, Coronado and Green Valley.

Corodano's Scott Lewis and Bishop Gorman's Richard Palasek were tied for first at 74.

It was also announced yesterday that Wicker was named first-team Northern 4A All-Region and teammate Eric Guzman, a sophomore, was named to the second team.
