Mathletes from Scarselli and Minden elementary schools won national awards for excellence in the elementary school division. Awards night was May 15 for Minden and May 17 for Scarselli.
The students were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate in the Math Olympiad program in a series of monthly contests from November to March. The students attended weekly practice sessions held by gifted/talented teacher Jeanne Blum.
The silver pin was awarded to Alex Appel and Mackenzie Parks of Minden and Jared Morgan of Scarselli who scored in the top 10 percent with scores of 19 out of 25 points.
The embroidered felt patch was awarded to those in the top 50 percent of all the participants including Minden students: Shaelin Morefield, Lizzy McNeilly, Bailey Lowe, Rumor Schilling, Samuel Frost, Mac Cronin, Madeline Strauss, David Ogles, Kari TenBroeck, Juliet Villanueva and Taylor Buckingham.
These Scarselli students received the embroidered felt patch: Nicholas Donat, Daniel Kruth, Micaela Herman, Jessica Olsen, Shelby Stoll, Kai Stoll, Courtney McKimmy, Chelsea Osborn, Bowman Littrell, Andrew Brockhage, Austin Bachman, Dalton Grisell, Joe Mejia-Arellano and Joey Swisher.
The Math Olympiad serves more than 4,500 teams and 100,000 students nationally and about 1,800 teams and 45,000 students in 32 other countries. Since 1979, it has provided challenging, thought-provoking problems that stretch the abilities of students in fourth- through eighth-grades requiring knowledge of mathematics.
