CV NET RIPPERS
The Carson Valley U13 Net Rippers participated in the Nevada Youth Soccer State Cup in Carson City on May 19.
The U13 division included two Northern Nevada teams and 11 southern teams.
Southern teams participated in a qualifying round prior to the finals, which pared the field down to just the four best southern teams that would make the the trip to Carson.
Carson Valley opened the tournament against the defending runner-up and No. 2 seed from Las Vegas, the Neusport FC '94 Green.
Despite playing a balanced game with numerous scoring opportunities, the Net Rippers came out on the short end of a 2-0 loss.
In the afternoon, the Net Rippers faced the third-seeded Heat FC '94.
The Net Rippers started off slowly and were down 2-0 at the half. Carson Valley took control in the second half. Katie Dry opened up the scoring with a 25-yard shot that floated over the keeper's head and into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, a collision in front of the Heat net left the keeper and a defender on the ground as Dry collected the ball, dribbled right and fired a shot on an open net.
With time running out, the Net Rippers were awarded a free kick on the Heat's end of the field.
April Sorenson quickly set the ball and made a pass to Holly Downer, who was able to dribble past a Heat defender and send the winning goal over the keeper's head and into the far corner of the net.
The win and the loss ended up giving the Net Rippers the No. 2 position in their flight. Only the No. 1 team from each flight advanced to the championship, where Las Vegas Premier '94 White defended their crown in a 1-0 win over Neusport FC '94 Green.
Net Rippers players include Rochelle Seymour, Jillian Olivera, Kaitlyn Varble, Kaelin Mejia, Holly Downer, Tia Lyons, Shannon Hubbard, Kaitlyn Dry, Kelsey Walsh, Alison Chambon, Alex Laing, April Sorenson, Shannon Prinz, Cora Moody, Jenna Geyer and Brianna Randall.
In recent league action, the Net Rippers remain undefeated in the U13 Gold division. They clinched the league championship last week with a 4-2 win over RSU Crush Premier.
