Joseph Edward Giomi


1918-2007


A funeral service is 11 a.m. Thursday at the Smith Valley Baptist Church, 888 Hudson Way, in Smith, for native Nevadan Joseph Edward Giomi, 89. Mr. Giomi died Nov. 7, 2007.


Born March 10, 1918, in Mason Valley to Frank and Cherabina Giomi, in 1936 he was a member of the Yerington Lyon football team that upset Las Vegas. He set a half-mile track record in 1937 that survived for 30 years and is remembered in the Yerington High Hall of Fame. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was an all-state tackle. In 1950 he married AnnaBelle McVicar.


He and his brother, John, purchased a ranch after graduating college. In 1948, they purchased Central Mercantile in Smith Valley and expanded to include the John Deere dealership in 1953. In 1969, the brothers sold the business and Mr. Giomi became manager of the Nevada Haygrowers Association.


Mr. Giomi helped build the Catholic Church, was volunteer firefighter, the 20/30 Club, and was honored for being the last living charter member of the Smith Valley Rotary.


He umpired little league baseball games and ran the measuring chains at Smith Valley Bulldog football games.


He became a born-again Christian and served as president of the Christian Businessman's Association and founded Grace Christian Fellowship Church where he was minister.


Mr Giomi is preceded in death by wife AnnaBelle, grandson Justin Lawrence, brother John Giomi and sister Edith Golightly.


Mr Giomi is survived by daughters JoAnne (Steve) McKnight, Loretta (Jim) Safford, Diana Lawrence and Katherine Giomi; grandchildren C.J. and Melissa Safford and MacKenzie Dahl; nephews John (Pat) Giomi, Joe Giomi; nieces Pattie (Ron) Dohoney and Dorothy Golightly.


A viewing is 10 a.m. Thursday, preceding the funeral service. Burial will be in the family plot at Hillcrest Cemetery.

John Charles Holth


1926-2007


A memorial service is 10 a.m. today at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church for John Charles Holth, 81, who died Nov. 8, 2007, surrounded by family.


Mr. Holth was born in Chicago in 1926 to Carter Henry Holth and Helen-Marr Yingling. He had two brothers and one sister. He joined the Navy at 17 and spent his tour of duty on the USS Arenac as an underwater demolitionist.


He married Bette Barr in 1946 and they had two children, Debbie and Lee. In 1960 they settled in Escondido, Calif., where he ran a machine shop and was the chief mechanic for the San Diego County water authority.


In 1990, the Holths moved to Gardnerville to be near their daughter Debbie, her husband Marc, and their granddaughters Jessica and Erin.


They moved to Wellington in 2001. He was a dedicated member of the Elks, Masons, Shriners, and American Legion.


Mr. Holth was preceded in death by his wife Bette in 2002 and his daughter Debbie in 2004. he is survived by his sister Georgette, his son Lee, his grandchildren Kellen, Jessica, and Erin, and his loving companion of the last few years, Norma Summey.


He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and his smile and big heart will be greatly missed.


Arrangements are in the care of FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home in Gardnerville.
