Thanks to all troops

Last week, six members of VFW Post 3567 were honored at the Coleville schools for their efforts and sacrifices in past wars. There was an assembly at the elementary school where the children honored every past war our country has been in. After that, both elementary school and high school students shook every veteran's hand, with thank-yous. It was very heartwarming for the veterans and much appreciated. Our thanks to the schools for teaching the children about what has been done to try to secure their lives and futures.

Medicare forum

Tomorrow, from 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a forum on the 2008 programs and benefits under Medicare at the Walker Senior Center. It will be very informative for all of us, I know.

Coleville Boosters barbecue

This meal of ribs, chicken and the trimmings will be served Nov. 17, with the doors opening at 4 p.m. and dinner starting at 5 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. There will be silent and dessert auctions, as well as a raffle. The cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children younger than 12. Let's go and congratulate all the athletes that will attend.

Emergency

pamphlets

Kathy Watkins of the Mono County Department of Social Services will be leaving pamphlets at the Walker Senior Center to educate all of us in preparing for and handling any emergency or disaster that could occur in our area. Stop by and pick up these valuable pieces of information.

Mail collection changes

The post office has advised that the blue drive-up mail box at 106834 Highway 395, adjacent to the Mountain View Barbecue, will now have a second mail pickup every day. On weekdays, the pickups will be at 9:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., with Saturday pickups at 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. This will allow us a little more leeway in the time of day we have to get our outgoing mail ready.

Christmas social

The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce will host a Christmas social Dec. 8 at the Walker Community Center. There will be a social hour from 5:30-6:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. The cost will be $10 per person. There will be a no host bar, karaoke, raffles and a dessert auction. Reservations need to be made by Dec. 4 at (530) 495-9666. In addition to the social, the chamber is sponsoring their annual Let There Be Light holiday contest for home Christmas decorations. There will be cash prizes for first through third place. You must enter by Dec. 4 at (530) 495-2508.

This and that

-- Well, I guess the wonderful rides had to come to an end. This past weekend, both the football and volleyball teams from Coleville High were eliminated from their state tournaments. The totally impressive part is that they are both in the top four teams in their division. We are so proud of them!

-- The Women's Club bazaar and the Antelope Valley Artist's Show were very well attended, despite the early morning rain on Sunday. There were a lot of people enjoying the talented artwork and then crossing the street to check out the good items for sale at the bazaar, including crafts and delicious homemade items.

-- Trout season in the eastern Sierra ends tomorrow. Now all you diehard fisherman will have to wait till Jan. 1 for the season to open at Topaz Lake.

I hope all of you had a nice Veteran's Day holiday and remembered the reason for the day. Thanks to all our troops, present and past!
