Seven people who may not have a chance to go to the movies are getting a free ride Monday to see "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" at the new Galaxy Theater in Carson City courtesy of the Douglas County Senior Center.
Director of Senior Services Warren Bottino said the senior center is trying something new Monday and has targeted some of their homebound Meals on Wheels clients who could not otherwise get out of their homes.
"I found that the Galaxy Theater has free movie days every Monday at 10 a.m. for people 65-plus," Bottino said. "They've had 'Key Largo' and 'West Side Story.'"
It is the senior center's first excursion geared to shut-ins. Bottino hopes to be running movie trips on the fourth Monday of each month.
"The idea is to get people to get out of their houses," he said. "People who otherwise would never leave or don't have family to help get them around. We have seven going on the first trip. In the future the driver will set up a route starting at 8:30 a.m. The kitchen provides a box lunch. Our largest bus can take up to 17."
