You know it is going to be a big one when the wind gusts are hitting 20 mph at 5 a.m. The National Weather Service is predicting that a front rolling out of the north should arrive tonight and early Friday, bringing much cooler temperatures and perhaps even snow to the Valley floors, mainly north of Interstate 80. The accompanying cold snap is expected to bring with it record low temperatures for Friday's date. Covering those plants may not be sufficient.

A wind advisory remains in effect between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. today with gusts of up to 50 mph in the valleys and 100 mph over the Sierra ridge tops. Blowing dust in the deserts will decrease visibility on the roads down to a mile in some places. There's already a wind advisory on Highway 395 through Washoe Valley where campers, trailers and large rolling billboards are not advised.

Robert "Fargo" Johnson is still a guest of the Douglas County Sheriff in Minden as he awaits transport to Colorado where a prison cell awaits him. Scuttlebutt is that today is the day they come get him, but there's no telling and they have until Oct. 8. Johnson lived on the lam for 31 years before he was caught by federal marshals last week.
