Today we'll be celebrating the fact Christopher Columbus landed in the New World 515 years ago by not getting our mail or being able to find an open bank. Otherwise, Nevada's state and local government offices will be open. In Nevada we gave up Columbus Day so we could celebrate Nevada Day, when the post office and the banks will be open, but the rest of us will be partying it up.
Western Nevada goes back under the high wind watch on Tuesday morning as another cold front comes shooting south. Winds ahead of the front will be 25-35 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph. My friend Mark, who lives in Wyoming, said 60 mph is slight breeze for them, so we've got that going for us.
There's a slight chance of showers on the other side of the front, with the Weather Service betting a 30 percent chance of rain on Tuesday night and a slight chance on Wednesday. Temperatures on the back end of this storm aren't nearly as cold as the last, so we might actually warm up above freezing for a bit. The temperature at 7 a.m. in Genoa is 28 degrees.
