The Partnership of Community Resources hosted a night of prevention for Hispanic families.

The topics were discussed in Spanish and included the awareness of drug and alcohol abuse, and laws for youth led by Douglas County Juvenile Probation Officer Mike Torres.

Torres emphasized that communication with your children was a major part of prevention of at risk behaviors.

He noted that in his work as a probation officer that he frequently finds that many Spanish only speaking parents have a communication gap with their English speaking children and frequently the parents aren't fully informed of the issues that surround their children.

Many youth are used to translate for their parents but many fail to fully disclose all of the information to their parents leaving the parents at a disadvantage.

For this reason he said parents should take advantage of all opportunities to learn English and to become involved in their children's community.

Also presenting was Dr. Yolanda Elejade, who discussed the nervous system and the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how diet plays a major role in the everyday lives and performance of our children.

Neyzer Torres of the Partnership of Community Resources presented information and local resources for Suicide Prevention.

Materials in English and Spanish were provided.
