Douglas High freshman Amelia Ritger rumbled through the latter half of the Northern 4A Regional Tennis Championships Saturday, beating Galena's Hannah Llop 6-1, 6-4 to win the regional title.

With the win, Ritger became Douglas' first regional tennis champion in more than 20 years. She did it with a record of 31-0 overall on the season.

Ritger beat Wooster's Diana Kovaltchouck 6-1, 6-0 earlier in the day to advance to the finals and clinch a berth at next week's state championships.

"I was just hoping to make it to state,' Ritger said after the championship match. "I wasn't worried so much about first place."

Even so, she was plenty stoked about the win.

"I'm very excited," she said.

Douglas High's Robert Shawhan and Keagan Chipp won the third place match 6-3, 6-3 in the boys' doubles bracket, advancing to next week's state tournament as well..
