Free classes in adaptive martial arts for students age 8 through adult are now being offered on Tuesdays at Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville.
Sensei Kevin Schaller said the self-defense system is based on kenpo karate which adapts to the needs, abilities and skills of the student.
"This is pragmatic self-defense training with a scriptural foundation to build the mind, body and spirit," he said.
Schaller has more than 25 years of martial arts training and instructional experience.
"I would like to see families get involved in our program," Schaller said. "I have found when families participate together, they all train harder and participate longer. In the past I have had families with children, parents, and grandparents all together. It is very rewarding."
He is a deputy and defensive tactics instructor with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and teaches the Fighting Chance program to all sixth grade students in Douglas County with Soroptimist International Club.
"We have also had success in working with special needs students. I believe students benefit not only from the pragmatic physical aspects of the training, but that the spiritual component facilitates a great deal of personal growth," Schaller said.
Classes are held Tuesday evenings at the church,1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville.
Students may join at anytime, however, Schaller asked new participants to come a few minutes early for their first class to register.
Classes for children ages 8-12 are from 5-6 p.m.
Classes for students age 13 through adult run from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Students should wear comfortable clothing and no jewelry. Uniforms are available for a nominal fee.
Schaller said there is no tuition, but donations are accepted to help cover expenses.
