The Douglas High girls' golf team remained perfect in Sierra League play Tuesday, winning the league tournament at Rosewood Lakes Golf Course by 39 strokes.

Freshman Bethany Wurster shot a 75 to take first overall and sophomore Heather Henderson took second with an 83.

Shelby Louie and Katie Gettman each shot an 89, Michele Nikkels shot a 100 and Katelyn Lee carded a 116.

"The girls continued to play well," Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said. "The great thing about these girls is when one player isn't playing well, the others step up to cover for them.

"It's a team sport, and they are determined to be the best team in Northern Nevada."

On Tuesday, Douglas battled a slow start to come back for the win.

"The front nine was disastrous for a few of the girls," Gustafson said. "Bethany finished the front nine at 42, but then birdied the par-4 10th and eagled the par-5 11th.

"She finished the back nine at three-under par.

"Heather's play was tremendous today. She kept the driver in the bag and played smart golf. Rosewood Lakes is a target golf course and the driver can only get you into trouble.

"Michele also shot her second score in the 80s, a major goal of hers all season long."

Carson was second with a score of 475, South Tahoe was third at 479, Reno was fourth (525) and Damonte Ranch was fifth (553).
