The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating a report of a "jumping in" gang initiation among juveniles Tuesday at Heritage Park in Gardnerville.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jim Halsey said an investigator was at Carson Valley Middle School following up on a on a graffiti report when he was dispatched to a group of teenagers involved at a fight at the park.

When he arrived, he said six Hispanic males appeared to be beating up a seventh male at the park. He said the victim refused to press charges or say anything about the incident.

Halsey said all seven teenagers left the park together.

A "jumping in" is an initiation - usually a beating - to determine if the victim is worthy of gang membership.

Since the alleged victim was uncooperative, Halsey said there was little the sheriff's office could do.

Halsey said such incidents are uncommon during the daytime where they may be witnesses.
