About 600 rainbow trout were dumped into Gilman Pond on Tuesday, creating Carson Valley's newest version of the old fishin' hole.
The new aquatic Gardnerville residents were transported from the Mason Valley Fish Hatchery by the Nevada Division of Wildlife.
Plans to stock the pond surfaced last fall as part of the effort to improve recreation on the Martin Slough Park, which includes the pond and a nature trail.
Gardnerville Town Manager Jim Park said the regular fishing rules apply, everyone may fish as long as they have a valid license.
According to state officials, the pond is not capable of supporting a self-sustained population of fish. That means residents are encouraged to fish the pond and take home their catch.
State Fisheries Biologist Pat Sollberger said future stocking of the pond will depend on how many people come out to fish.
