A frigid morning and an historic iron horse were the key ingredients for Ralph Elligott's first place winning photograph in the latest Carson Valley Photo Club competition.
Elligott said the 23-degree air helped create a massive steam cloud as old Engine No. 8 was fired up shortly after dawn earlier this month. He titled the photo Winter Steam Up.
Elligott is a volunteer locomotive engineer and docent at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City where he snapped the winning photo of the engine built in 1888 with a Canon 30D digital camera.
Pam Brekas took second place with Flowers for Sale, a color photo of a bouquet shot in San Francisco. Third place went to Pat Colon. It was a close-up of a ladybug shot in her Gardnerville front yard.
The winning photos will be on display in the lobby of the Douglas County Public Library in Minden.
Ray Moore and Kathy Port were elected to the club's board of directors, joining founding president Dave Colon.
The club's next meeting is 7 p.m. May 22 at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville. Information at cvphotoclub.com or 7834-8600.
