Baseball: Douglas sweeps doubleheader from Hug

The Douglas High baseball team took care of business Saturday, ensuring that the upcoming week's series against Reno will decide the Sierra League title.


Douglas completed a three-game sweep of Hug, taking 12-0 and 13-0 wins Saturday in Minden.


Pitchers Jordan Hadlock and Tim Rudnick combined to no-hit the Hawks in game two of the doubleheader. Hadlock struck out four in four innings and Rudnick struck out one in the fifth.


Shane Fencl and Tanner Thomas each drove in a pair of runs in the opening game while Ryan Quenga tripled and Fencl doubled.


Quenga, Kyle Flagg, Beau Davis and Brett Harley each had an RBI in the win.


In game two, Tyler Hoelzen had three RBIs while Quenga, Ryan Moglich, Hartley and Troy Torres each drove in two.


Flagg added another RBI to complete the scoring.


Sophomore Michael Whalin took the win, striking out seven while Jeff Crozier pitched the fifth inning with one strikeout.


Moglich went an impressive 10-for-10 in the three-game series with seven RBIs total.


Douglas will host Reno Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., travel to Reno Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and wrap up the series back in Minden Friday at 3:30 p.m.


The winner of the series will win the league title and clinch the No. 1 seed heading into the Northern 4A Regional playoffs in two weeks.
