Many services offered at Mono County Clinic

The Mono County Health Nurse will be at the Walker Senior Center again on May 13 and 20, noon to 1 p.m. As I have mentioned before, you can get blood pressure checks, immunizations, etc. The other strong point is that, if you planning on traveling out of the country this summer, there are a variety of internationally important immunizations available by calling their office at (760) 924-1830. Another potentially important immunization they offer is the herpes virus vaccination. Just remember the availability of these for your health.

Lions Club speaker

The local Lions Club Speaker's Contest winner, Reno Probert, has moved on through a couple of regional and district competitions and was in Glendale last Saturday for the zone finals. As one who has heard him speak, I can say that he is a great speaker. The subject they had to speak about was "Immigration - Your Solution." Reno didn't win the contest, but what amazes me after hearing the logical and adult way he dealt with the subject of immigration, is to find out that the boy who won thinks that the solution is to invade Mexico. Somehow, I worry a bit about how he will do in the real world, but time will tell. We're all very proud of Reno and wish him well from here on.

Mountain Warfare Challenge

On May 16, there will be a spaghetti dinner at the MWTC club, starting at 6 p.m. There will be live music, raffle, and bonfire, too. At 11 a.m. the next day, the off-road cross country obstacle run begins. For information to join this race, go to y-events.com/mwtc/. During the day of the race, there will be a bounce house, face painting, fishing pond, mule rides and an appearance by the Coleville Colorguard.

Salvation Army reminder

As I told you last week, the Salvation Army wants to help local residents in crisis, needing temporary housing, food, etc. If you need these or know someone who does, call (877) 617-8243.

ATV Jamboree and Spring Fling

These two events will be held the same weekend, June 20-22. The ATV event is open to anyone 16 or older, but 16to 17 year-olds must have a parent/guardian on rides with them. The three days of riding will take place on U.S. Forest Service lands and trails around our area. The cost will be $99 per person, which includes a dinner Saturday night, continental breakfasts, a ride T-shirt and other goodies.

The Spring Fling will be held as usual, on the highway in Walker. It will offer crafts, vendors, etc. as always. I'll keep you updated on the details of both events, which are sponsored by the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce.

Opening days of fishing season

My husband, Mike, and his best friend, Bob, had been waiting for the season to open last Saturday. They went to the river, and caught and released two 4-pound and one 6 1Ú2-pound trout. The next morning, due to our warm weather, the river was up higher and not as clear. I'm afraid we're now going to start the time of year that the runoff will diminish the fishing fun. There's always a little later, though.
