DMVinstalls new kiosks

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is replacing all its self-service kiosks with new machines that offer new services.

For the first time, motorists will be able to get a driver history printout from the kiosks located at all of the larger DMV offices and at select locations of AAA Nevada in Las Vegas and Reno. Other new features include electronic checks for payment, dispensing coins as change and voice assistance in English and Spanish.

"Our kiosks continue to be a key part of the DMV's ongoing effort to offer better services and save money at the same time," said DMV Director Ginny Lewis.

The department estimates that as many as 5,000 customers per month could use the new driver history service, cutting the wait times for all customers. The kiosks offer three-year, nine-year and 10-year histories for $7. Drivers need history printouts for employment or insurance purposes.

Some 25,000 Nevadans use the DMV kiosks every month with more than 900,000 transactions completed since the first kiosks debuted in the spring of 2004. The majority are vehicle registration renewals, but the kiosks also feature reinstatement of registrations that have been suspended for a lapse of insurance. Driver license renewals, which were offered on the old kiosks, will be added to the new machines in early 2009. Duplicate vehicle registrations are also planned.

The Department of Motor Vehicles was the first Nevada state agency to accept a full range of payment options including cash, electronic check, debit cards and four major credit cards. The electronic check and debit card options save the state money through reduced credit card fees.

The coin capability of the new kiosks enable them to now offer registration renewals up to 18 months late.

The new kiosks are built and maintained by Intellectual Technology, Inc. of Carlsbad, Calif., under a four-year contract awarded following a request for proposal last year. ITI pays all up-front costs. The company is paid through per-transaction fees.
