Thank you to everyone in our community. Because of you our Taste of the Towns was the best one we've ever had. Thank you so much for your support of your local museums.
The Taste of the Towns winners are: Best Taste, Russell's Mercantile; Best Atmosphere and Best Overall, JT Basque Bar & Dining Room; Best Shop, Classical Glass and Best Discovery was a tie between Russell's Mercantile and Battle Born Wines with Felix Pottery and Sugar Daddy Ice Cream coming in very close seconds. Thanks to everyone concerned.
And we have a winner in our July photo contest. Pam Brekas captured the spirit of July in Douglas County with a display of the flag in Heritage Park and one of our famous lenticular clouds. Congratulations Pam. Runners-up were Kathy Port and Diane Theriot.
So now we open the August contest which will finish the contests for the 2009 calendar. Remember, we need a photo of something that just looks like August in Douglas County. Think about lazy days, maybe up at the Lake or down at Topaz. Or even a summer shower. The choice is yours. September will start a new calendar year for us with the DCHS 2010 calendar. If you keep supplying the photos, we'll keep the calendar contests going.
The Douglas County Historical Society Swap Meets continue on Saturday. This event is free for shoppers and a great place to exhibit your treasures or talents. Crafters: this is the venue for you to sell your work. The next swap meet will be Aug. 23.
Coming on Aug.14, the ongoing lecture series will present Sue Ballew, president of the Carson City Historical Society and a docent at the Nevada State Museum. Ms. Ballew will portray Nellie Mighels Davis, wife of Nevada Appeal editors Henry R. Mighels and Sam P. Davis.
