Second Saturday events for August

Events for the Carson Valley Art Galleries' Second Saturday include:

n Southwest artist Norma Holland tells the history of gourds and demonstrates steps in creating artwork from gourds, 1-3 p.m. Saturday, at East Fork Gallery, 1503 Highway 395, Gardnerville, 782-7629. Light refreshments will be served.

n Markleeville musician and artist Russel Ketenjian plays the oud, a traditional Persian stringed instrument, 3-5 p.m. Saturday, at Artisans International Gallery, 1653 Lucerne St., Minden Village, 783-8881. Ketenjian's ceramic artwork will be on display. Light refreshments will be served.

n Margo Petterson demonstrates oil painting, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, at Artistic Viewpoints Gallery and Studio in the old Copeland Lumber building, 1572 Highway 395, Minden, 783-0633. Petterson is known for her Feminine West series and equine art. Light refreshments will be served.

n Horse hair pottery offered at special prices, Saturday at Felix Pottery & Artisan's Shoppe, 1459 Highway 395 in Gardnerville.

n See what's new at Lone Tree Gallery, 1598 Esmeralda Ave., Minden. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Information, 782-2522.

Artists' work displayed in museum bookstore

Members of the Carson Valley Art Association will display their art in the Main Street Bookstore in the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center through August.

This month's featured artists are Linda Bottoms, Helen Martin, Mark Tompkins and Nancy Clarke.

The Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for youth age 6 to 16. Access to the book store is free. Information, 782-2555.


Register by Aug. 30

for art classes

Artist Reiko Hervin offers drawing and watercolor classes from September to December at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension conference room, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.

There are beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Each class includes 30 minutes of still-life drawing and two hours of watercolor painting and critique.

Beginning class A: Step-by-step for the absolute beginner, 9:30 a.m. to noon, Thursdays. Six classes starting Sept. 11 and running through Dec. 11.

Intermediate class B: For less than three years' painting experience, 1-3:30 p.m., Thursdays. Six classes starting Sept. 11 and running through Dec. 11.

Advanced class C: For advanced amateurs with more than five years' painting experience, 1-3:30 p.m. Thursdays. Six classes starting Sept. 4 and running through Dec. 4

Drawing and painting class begins Sept. 2

Drawing for painting class, 1:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 2 through Oct. 7, at Artistic Viewpoints Gallery and Studio, 1572 Highway 395, Minden.

Instructor Teri Sweeney covers how to use the grid system, drawing large outline shapes, one- and two-point perspectives and drawing from life.

Learn silk painting

at workshop

Silk painting workshop, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4, at Artistic Viewpoints Gallery and Studio, 1572 Highway 395, Minden.

Artist Louise Noel Howes instructs on how to paint a scarf using the black resist method. Cost is $120 for class and materials. Sign up in advance at 783-0633.
