The body of an apparent transient was found by a traveler on Sunday two miles west of Carson City on Spooner Summit.

About 12:47 p.m. the motorist pulled into the paved turnout and immediately spotted the man down a short embankment and in a ravine on the north side of the highway.

The body, dressed in a flannel shirt, blue jeans and boots, was lying on a plastic tarp set up like a bed. It was surrounded by belongings - plastic bags, a backpack, jug of water and a sleeping bag.

The face was covered by another jacket and its head was on a pillow. It appeared as if he'd been there for two or three days, according to paramedics.

Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Darrin Sloan said identification found on the body named a 70-year-old California man.

The body was taken to the Washoe County Coroner's Office. Identification is pending an autopsy.
