On Saturday, Aug. 23, Mono County, the Town of Mammoth Lakes, and the U.S. Marine Corps at Mountain Warfare Training Center and base housing will be holding a disaster drill beginning at 9 a.m. The drill will cover four areas, including the MWTC location, as well as base housing in Coleville. This exercise is being done to assess the response capabilities needed in case of a real disaster situation. This is only an exercise and not a real disaster happening.

Thrift store sale begins Tuesday

The monthly sale of clothing for $3 per bag will take place Tuesday, Aug. 19, through Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Walker Thrift Store. They will be selling some really nice clothes for that low price per bag from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day. Stop by and check it out.

Art and wine

The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring an evening of art and wine tasting Aug. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. There will be art exhibited by many local artists, as well as some lovely artworks available for purchase. The cost of $25 includes wine tasting and appetizers from restaurants in our area. You must be 21 to attend, however, with no children admitted.

This and that

n It can't just be at our house, so I'm assuming that everyone has been inundated with hungry little hummingbirds in the last several weeks. They empty the feeders faster than we have ever seen them do, bickering with each other all the while. They are so fascinating to watch, with their wings moving so fast and the pretty colors on many of them. It has been a lot of fun, and I hope they won't move on for a while.

n I did get lucky in the How Big is Big? fishing derby and won a theme T-shirt for my 30th place effort. Our friends from the Sacramento Valley came to visit and fish for a week, and their 16-year-old son won 21st place in the derby, getting a very nice gift certificate from 3 Flags Trading Post, where his mother loves to shop. Looking at the list of sizes of fish entered, there were a lot of nice ones caught this year.

n Every time I'm on the highway, there are so many cars going up and down the road that it doesn't seem like the price of gas has slowed travel that much. Hopefully, this will mean that our local businesses will do well with the Labor Day crowds on their way to and from their weekend activities.
