While Douglas's 32.81 percent of active voter turnout wasn't anything to write home about, it beat the pants of Washoe County's turnout of 16 percent and Lyon County's 23.08 percent. Best turnout in the state was for Humboldt County, which hit 43.29 percent. That's lower than our turnout in 2004 when we hit 45.73 percent. Douglas Republicans were right up there with the cow counties at 42 percent this time. Just shows you've got to have a race to get the voters. All this is according to the Nevada Secretary of State, who has not updated the Web site this morning.

School board trustees got within 10 percent of their goal of cutting $1.279 million out of the budget on Tuesday night. They balked at cutting more than a quarter million in grants that were funding a variety of programs in the schools, including tutors at Scarselli Elementary. They are under orders from the state to pull 4.2 percent from their budget this year. Next year, Carol Lark warned trustees, put a 1 out in front of that 4 percent and go looking for $5 million to cut.

Today is part two of a marathon master plan amendment hearing held by the Douglas County Planning Commission. After approving Big George's request for higher density on Tuesday they wrapped up and will tackle Park Cattle Co.'s request fresh. Planning commissioners reconvene at 9:30 a.m.

In case you didn't notice yesterday, the weather decided to take a turn for the hotter. The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 97 degrees today and 98 on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures are supposed to drop back into the low 90s next week.
