De judge vu for former Carson Valley residents

Former Willowbend resident Audrey Prupas called on Friday to tell me that her granddaughter was married Aug. 2 in a ceremony just a month shy of 30 years after her mother was married in Genoa on Sept. 10, 1978.

The ceremony to join Darrin Powers and Megan Tibbals took place on the Safari Rose at Lake Tahoe. Megan's parents, Stephen and Sheree were married at Audrey's home.

The date was not the only thing familiar about the ceremony, Audrey said. The man performing both ceremonies was none other than Foothill resident and former Nevada Supreme Court Justice Noel E. Manoukian.

Audrey and husband Norman are living in Reno. Their son, Aaron, who graduated from Douglas High in 1985, is a U.S. Air Force officer.

While I was checking financial statements at the Douglas County Clerk's Office I overheard a gentleman come in and ask why he was voting on three commissioner districts instead of just the one he lived in.

I asked Valida McMichael, who was able to get the districts question on the ballot back in 1996.

She said that when Douglas County went from three to five commissioners there was supposed to be a vote on that very question, but it was overlooked.

The question appeared on the November ballot and voters decided to keep the system as it is, 8,288-6,420.

Blaine Spires may not have a seat on the Douglas County commission, but he does have one whopper of a thesis for his masters degree in political science.

"I think my thesis is going to be pretty entertaining," he said on election night, looking on the bright side.

I've asked him to send me a copy and I'm looking forward to reading it.

Having attended a few Gardnerville Town Board meetings in my day (fewer than you might think) I'm betting that Jeff Summers' recognition ceremony was one of the best attended ever.

It didn't hurt that Jeff's co-workers were among the standing-room only crowd for the presentation for a plaque for his 25 years of service to the town.

But it really helped that he was on before the Park Cattle Co. proposal. The applause was just as enthusiastic.

The entire town staff attended the Douglas County commission meeting last week to show their support for Jeff.

Circulation Manager Tony King tells me entries are rolling in for one of five $100 gas cards to be raffled off on Sept. 30. Entry into the contest is as easy as converting an existing subscription to EZ Pay, buying one of the Douglas County History books, purchasing a gift subscription or signing up as a new subscriber (you've got to let 30 days go by between subscriptions to qualify).
