Douglas High fall sports snapshot

Editor's note: With camp officially opening for the fall athletic teams at Douglas High, here are some storylines to keep an eye on in the upcoming season.

The Douglas boys' soccer team will be attempting to defend their 2007 regional championship while Bethany Wurster (golf) and Amelia Ritger (tennis) each have individual regional titles to defend. Volleyball is coming off a league-title season.

Football: Two of the Tigers' most tenured coaches, Bob Bateman and Steve Wilcox, have left. Douglas has just three starters back on offense and two back on defense. Don't be fooled though, the junior varsity and freshman programs went undefeated last year. The biggest question will be how fast the new faces can adjust to the varsity level of play. A quick turn-around against a tough front end of the schedule could mean a big season for the Tigers.

Boys' Soccer: The regional title and the state runner-up finish, not to mention the first state playoff win in school history, would be a hard enough act to follow. The Tigers will be replacing eight starters from that dream team.

Volleyball: Douglas loses just two starters from its regional runner-up squad and has four senior veterans coming in to this year. The scary part for Douglas opponents is, as talented as this year's seniors are, the bulk of the team's depth and talent will be in the sophomore and junior classes.
