Forest fire burning near Marine training center

The highway that leads to the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center at Pickel Meadows is closed this morning due to a 100-acre forest fire set by lightning Sunday.

Highway 108 is closed due to firefighting traffic and smoke from 1.5 miles west of the junction with Highway 395, according to the California Department of Transportation,

The fire is located five miles northwest of the intersection with Highway 395. According to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, no structures are threatened, and no injuries reported. Marines in training and some hunters have been evacuated from the area. The fire is being fought by the U.S. Forest Service and base firefighting units, including eight engines and two crews. Six airtankers made drops on the fire before.
