A memorial service is 10 a.m. Tuesday at FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home for Gardnerville resident Andrew Chereb, 84, who died Aug. 14 at his home.

Born Nov. 19, 1923, in Mount Sinai, N.Y., he lived most of his life in the nearby town of Miller Place on Long Island's north shore, where he was a vegetable farmer. In 1950, he married Mildred "Nonny" Bochinsky. Andrew also was a founding member of the Miller Place Volunteer Fire Department. In 2002, his lifelong community service was recognized when he was named grand marshal of the department's 50th anniversary celebration. The department also named its engine company, the "Andrew Chereb Engine Co.," in his honor.

Mr. Chereb and Nonny moved to Gardnerville in 1996 to be closer to family.

He is survived by his bride of nearly 58 years; sons James of Carson City and Mike of Rantoul, Ill., daughter Sandra and son-in-law Mike Harper of Gardnerville; brother George of Phoenix; sisters Rose and Anna of Long Island; and nieces and nephews.

The family requests donations be made in Mr. Chereb's name to the East Fork Fire and Paramedic District.
