A Carson Valley resident who was a victim in a series of burglaries in early July said the thefts have endangered the legacy she plans on leaving to her children.
Two teenagers are accused of stealing the safe containing all Katherine Nason-Lewis' valuables and her cancer medication on the evening of July 6.
Kyle Liddicoat, 18, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary on Tuesday. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Jacob Lacey in connection with the thefts.
Nason-Lewis said Lacey who was a neighbor, stayed overnight in her house and knew her children.
"This burglary was done by someone who I allowed in my house," she said. "For him to do this to me. I just don't understand it."
In addition to the safe, which contained thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and coins, burglars took her drivers license, social security card and her child support card.
"It takes time for that money to be replaced," she said. "They have to investigate that, too."
Nason-Lewis, 35, is a cancer patient who said she has had 24 surgeries in 10 years.
She had an emergency hysterectomy and had to have her kidney removed in 2005.
"Fortunately, I'm in remission right now," she said. "I suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and all of this as a single parent. I saved all this stuff for my children. It's very heartbreaking that it's all gone."
Nason-Lewis said when she was first diagnosed with ovarian and uterine cancer she was not supposed to live past age 25.
"I was told every year for several years that I was not going to make it another year," he said.
She said that all the things of value she saved were to take care of her children should she succumb to the cancer.
"Time with me is always of the essence," she said. "Just because I'm having a good patch medically right now, doesn't mean I have a lotof time. It's hard for me to sit and wait."
Nason-Lewis is a six-year resident of Carson Valley. Her daughter is 15 and her son is 14.
