Fire departments' dinner dances are for good causes

We had a great time at the Sheridan Volunteer Fire Department's recent dinner dance. We go to all of the volunteer fire departments fundraisers as these are the folks that protect us, and we appreciate them.

The food was delicious, as usual, and I won a very exciting door prize " two nights at a beautiful suite at the Ridge Tahoe. Whoopee! Thank you. It sounds very good to me and I'm anxious to go. I'm feeling very lucky right now. Maybe I'll win one of the neat raffle prizes at the upcoming Fish Springs Volunteer Fire Department's annual spaghetti dinner dance. There'll be a delicious dinner with a no-host bar and lots of dancing to the music by the Longshot band from 5:30 p.m. until midnight.

This will be a good time to visit with your neighbors and also to meet the new folks on your block. You can do it all, and support your volunteer fire department at the same time. This is the only fundraiser that the Fish Springs fire department puts on and it's really a great community event. Please plan to attend and support these men and women who spend hundreds of volunteer hours each year in specialized training and actual response to medical emergencies and fire incidents. If you would like to bring a dessert, our firefighters would really appreciate it.

Our volunteer firefighters and their wives worked very hard in getting this thing together and they did such a professional job that I think they ought to hire out for parties. Any takers? We hope to see you on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the firehouse, 2249 Fish Springs Road. Dinner tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. If you'd like more information, call 782-4344.

Ready to ride

Last weekend 12 members of the Nevada Wandering Wheels Motorcycle Club took a ride to the Ice House Reservoir " and this time there was no snow on the road. But there were a couple of cows in the road that we had to dodge. It was a sparkling day. We rode on down from the mountain and to the 160-year-old Georgetown Hotel where we stopped for lunch. It was a very beautiful ride.

On our ride back home one of the guys needed assistance so Carole Tomer, who is a volunteer EMT firefighter right here in Fish Springs, jumped in and rode his big sport bike home for him. Thank you Carole, and everyone else that day. One of the benefits of riding with other people is if you have a problem, someone's going to help you. You won't be stranded out in the sticks someplace. If you have a motorcycle and you'd like to ride along with other bike enthusiasts, come to a Nevada Wandering Wheels Motorcycle Club meeting the fourth Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. at Jethro's Oven & Grill.
