We're saying goodbye to Minden Office Manager Sheila Byington today at 4 p.m. in the town offices. The title office manager in no way describes Sheila's actual duties as the person who runs the town's day to day operations. But retirement calls, and thanks to Senate Bill 544, it uses a bullhorn.

On Sunday, Barbara Griffin will swear in Ted Thran as Douglas County's new clerk-treasurer and then will turn over the keys to the office she's held for 21 years over to another generation. Barbara and I have worked closely together over the years. She's a tireless advocate for the electoral process. She's always kept the faith with voters. And when there was trouble, she met it head on. God speed, Barbara.

A dry cold front is looming in the forecast, which means it's going to push hot, dry air out in front of it as it passes through Western Nevada. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Saturday afternoon, thanks to high winds and low humidity. For today expect the high to creep toward 100. Then on Saturday and Sunday gusty winds could hit up to 45 mph. On Labor Day the bottom drops out, with the high climbing to the mid-70s in the Valleys and the 60s in the Sierra.

Here's a warning for gardeners in the high Sierra valleys, cover your plants. The National Weather Service is predicting freezing temperatures to hit Truckee and South Lake Tahoe. I can only assume the same goes for Hope Valley.
