Tonight is the last meeting for two of Douglas County's longest serving pubic officials. Minden Town Board members Ray Wilson and Bruce Jacobsen have served their community since Reagan was in office. Unless county commissioners select his Jacobsen's wife to succeed him, Jan. 1 will be the first time since the 1950s that a Jacobsen hasn't held public office in Douglas County. Minden will be making a recommendation on two of the 18 residents who have applied for the seats at their 6 p.m. meeting. County commissioners are scheduled to appoint someone on Thursday.
Both Minden officials, Gardnerville Town Board member Randy Slater, Genoa Town Board member Bill Donohoe and Gardnerville Ranchos General Improvement District Board member Bev Page are prevented from serving on their respective boards due to term limits enacted a decade ago. The last regular meeting for Donohoe and Slater was Tuesday night.
Members of the Genoa Town Board rejected on Tuesday night a counter offer from the operators of three independent festivals they say compete with Candy Dance. Board members said the agreement prepared by an attorney for the three private festivals was pretty much the exact opposite of what they'd worked out.
Gardnerville has quite a show prepared for its annual Christmas kick-off tonight in Heritage Park, I'm told. The event is 5:30 p.m., and literally does kick off a series of Christmas celebrations in Carson Valley that culminates in weekend events in the annual Parade of Lights on Saturday.
Dress warm tonight, because the temperatures may actually reflect the season, with lows dropping into the teens tonight and Friday. It won't be that cold at the Christmas lightings, but once the sun goes down, it will be chilly.
