The Douglas High girls' basketball team pulled things together with a late push Thursday night to pick up a 38-29 win over Roseville in its season-opener at the Whitney Invitational in California.
Douglas trailed 25-24 with a little over 3:30 left in the game when senior Maci Pfaffenberger hit a big 3-pointer to put Douglas up for good.
Pfaffenberger then came up with a steal on the other end to spark a final run that helped Douglas pull away.
"We ended up playing some really good basketball right at the end and were able to get a win," Douglas coach Werner Christen said. "We won ugly, but it was a win. We saw a lot of typical first-game jitters and mistakes."
Christen said he was pleased with the shots Douglas was able to get in position for, but the Tigers simply couldn't get them to fall.
"We were in the right spots, but we just didn't finish well," he said.
Douglas worked to set up a running offense, but had some spacing problems throughout the game.
"We tried to run, but our spacing wasn't great," Christen said. "We didn't get some people in the right spots, and that will slow you down when you try to do that."
Jessica Waggoner led the Tigers with 16 points and Taryn Williams added seven.
"Everyone got to play," Christen said. "We're still searching for combinations. We need to do a better job rebounding, we saw them getting a lot of second and third chances on us."
Douglas was scheduled to take on Whitney Friday night.
