Max Baer's getting his sign, after Douglas County commissioners voted 4-1 on Thursday to overturn a planning commission decision to reject the latest version of the big derrick. But to get the approval,Max's Beverly Hillbillies Resort and Mansion will have to share the derrick with other signs for the project. Work will have to begin on the casino before the sign's built.

According to Harmon Zuckerman, the sign area was reduced. The 534-square foot readerboard was limited to 375 square feet, and the rest of the sign was limited proportionally. The rest of the signs, 344 square feet, when reduced by the same percentage, is limited to 242 square feet. Therefore, total sign area is 617 square feet. The appellant was requesting 878.

Closer to home, Valley Christian Fellowship won approval for its church in the Gardnerville Ranchos, when commissioners overturned the planning commission rejection 3-2.

Just two months into the water year, Carson Valley's way behind, but the Sierra aren't in too bad a shape. Minden saw .54 inches of moisture during November, according to the National Weather Service. That's 61 percent of average for the month and 44 percent of average for this spot in the water year. However, the snow telemetry at Spratt Creek, Poison Flat and Ebbetts Pass are all at 100 percent average or above. Even so, at best only a fifth of the moisture for the year has fallen. December, January and February is when we get most of our precipitation, and so far December isn't looking so hot.

The forecast shows we may get half way through December without a drop of moisture. Sunny skies with highs climbing toward 60 is all there is in the long-range forecast. Today the high is expected to hit 54 degrees under sunny skies.
