The Douglas County School District is hosting a town hall meeting to discuss potential budget cuts 6 p.m. Dec. 15 at Carson Valley Middle School.
Superintendent Carol Lark is inviting all parents and community members to the meeting to hear a presentation on the current budget crisis facing the district.
The projected best-case scenario for the 2009-10 fiscal cycle is a 7-percent cut, roughly $2.4 million out of $34.5 million budget, or nearly $3 million when a $582,067 shortfall in the retiree state health subsidy program is taken into account.
The middle-case scenario is a 14-percent cut, $5.4 million, and the worst-case a 21-percent cut, $7.8 million.
District officials have considered cutting various programs, including gifted and talented, middle school sports and field trips. Personnel cuts are also a possibility.
The Douglas County School Board will not make final decisions until February.
Audience members will be able to address Lark directly at the meeting. For those that cannot attend, e-mail suggestions to suptoffice@dcsd.k12.nv.us or go to the district's Web site at www.dcsd.k12.nv.us and follow the link.
