The second-annual Carson Valley Cougar baseball camp has undergone a name-change.

This year's camp will roll out as the Joey Jacobsen Baseball Camp, named after the Carson Valley 10-year-old who was critically injured in a woodcutting accident on Nov. 29. Jacobsen was a participant in the camp last year.

All of the proceeds from the camp will be donated to the Jaconsen family to help offset Joey's medical costs. He has been in an induced coma at Renown Regional Medical Center since the accident.

"It's going to be a super long journey for him," said Bruce Jacobsen, Joey's cousin and director of operations for the Carson Valley Cougars. "It's hard for us to understand that just because he's getting better doesn't mean he's going to walk out the door tomorrow. We'd all like to see that, of course, but it is going to be a long battle."

The camp is scheduled for Dec. 29, 30 and 31 at the Cougar facility at 2222 Park Place in Minden. There will be two sessions, on from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for 5- to 9-year-old players and one from 12 to 2:30 p.m. for 10- to 12-year-olds.

"We'll go over everything " pitching, hitting, fielding " the whole nine yards," Jacobsen said. "We'll do some different training stuff to help get kids in shape for the spring."

Cost is $40 per camper an includes all three days of instruction. For each additional player from the house hold, it will be $10 a piece.

Clinicians will include Jacobsen, who played for Douglas High and later at Washington State University, John Fencl, who runs the Carson Valley Cougars, and a number of current and former Douglas High baseball players.

"We had 100 kids for about two camps last year," Jacobsen said. "Anyone of any skill level is welcome. We're prepared to work everyone from T-ballers to Majors. This will be a good tune-up to get kids ready for Little League."
