A 38-year-old Gardnerville man who claimed his 5-year-old daughter initiated sexual contact with him was sentenced Monday to 10 years in Nevada State Prison.
Edgardo Flores must serve 48 months before he is eligible for parole.
"This is the only way to ensure that you are properly punished for what you did wrong and your children will be protected as long as possible," said District Judge Michael Gibbons.
Flores pleaded no contest to attempted lewdness with a child under 14.
He was accused of having sexual contact with his 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son.
"I'm being translated into a monster," Flores said. "I am not a monster. I am not a perpetrator, either. I made a mistake. I love them and would never do anything to hurt my children."
Prosecutor Tom Gregory said Flores' court-ordered psychosexual evaluation indicated he was a pedophile.
"I don't recall seeing a more problematic diagnosis," Gregory said. "When he was first interviewed, he said his 5-year-old daughter 'had been around the block,' and he didn't enjoy it, but she probably did."
Flores' lawyer Tod Young said his client had an "ugly, ugly childhood."
"Terrible things happened to him. That's how he was raised. He had to fend off the demons himself. It's a terrible thing that has brought him before this court," Young said. "He never engaged in any behavior that he consciously thought would harm his son or daughter. It was not his objective to create a victim. He does love his children."
Young said he didn't know if Flores would be deported after he serves his sentence.
Gibbons told Flores he must register as a sex offender and be subject to lifetime supervision
