Winter storm warning starts today

A 24-hour long winter storm warning goes into effect at 4 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service. Expect winds of 10-20 mph with gusts of up to 30 mph as the front approaches. Snow accumulation could be 4-8 inches in the Valley, with visibility reduced to less than half a mile by heavy and blowing snow. Forecasters are telling motorists to expect a rough commute on Monday morning.

Forecasters are calling for a 90 percent chance of precipitation tonight through Monday afternoon. Expect high temperatures in the 30s.

Chains or four-wheel drive with snow tires are required over all three routes across the Sierra today, including highways 88 and 50 and Interstate 80. Chains or snow tires are required over Mount Rose Highway and along Highway 89 from Emerald Bay north to Sierraville. A high wind watch is in effect on Highway 395 through Washoe Valley.
