The Mono County Public Health Department nurse will be at the Walker Senior Center on Feb. 12 and Feb. 26, from noon to 1 p.m. to do blood pressure checks and immunizations. If you need to see them for an immunization, let them know in advance at (760) 924-1830.

Coleville student

nominated to attend academy

Sean Sherlock of Coleville High School has accomplished something pretty impressive in being nominated by Congress to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Sherlock applied for this prestigious opportunity and was sponsored by Rep. Buck McKeon. He had to undergo an extensive interview process to get this far. Next, there will be rigorous evaluation by the academy, including his grade scores, physical examinations and interviews.

The results should be known in March or April. We all should be proud of one of our own receiving this honor, and our young people should realize that the sky is the limit for their success, too. Good luck, Sean.

Lions Club speech contest

This annual event will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Walker Community Center. As I mentioned last week, the speech topic is Immigration - My Solution.

Those should be some pretty interesting speeches, and it will be well worth hearing what our up-coming adults' viewpoints are.

Topaz fishing

All reports have been that the results at Topaz Lake during their fishing derby haven't been really great since the first week of the event. The weather has played a big part in that, so we'll hope that there is better weather soon, with the results the fishermen are hoping for.

Super Bowl Sunday

I hope everyone enjoyed Super Bowl Sunday, once the snow stopped. It's always nice to get together with friends and/or family and have a relaxed afternoon with good company and all the tasty munchies that people prepare for such a get-together. Congratulations to all rooters for the New York Giants on their win.

Planning advisory meeting

The Antelope Valley Regional Planning Advisory Committee will have their regular monthly meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. It is good to be involved in our area's future plans, so try to attend one of these meetings.
