A Washington man was killed in a head-on accident on Highway 395 at Courtland Lane that closed the highway for nearly three hours and sent both drivers to the hospital.
Thomas Riley Overly, from Edgewood, Wash., was a passenger in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by his sister, Bishop resident Jeannie Darlene Hawkins, 39, at about 2:37 p.m. Wednesday.
According to trooper Chuck Allen of the Nevada Highway Patrol, Hawkins allegedly swerved to miss an animal on the highway and into the path of Topaz Ranch Estates resident Maricela Madrigal-Delopez, 38, who was southbound in a 1991 GMC Blazer.
Both drivers were taken by Care Flight medical ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno with serious injuries, according to Allen. All three were wearing safety belts.
Four of six dogs riding in Hawkins' vehicle died in the accident.
Witnesses or anyone with additional information should contact Trooper Mike Gamberg at (775) 688-2500 ext. 4 or (775) 687-0400 regarding case No. 0802131163.
