Work to clear a fatal head-on accident at Highway 395 and Ray May Way in the Pine Nut Mountains is under way.
The accident occurred at 2:37 p.m. when a woman driving a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee north containing two people and six dogs tried to avoid an animal on the roadway, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Trooper Chuck Allen said the woman pulled out into the path of a southbound 1991 GMC Blazer.
The male passenger in the Cherokee was killed along with four of the dogs.
Allen said two flatbed trucks are en route to the scene of the accident and will move the vehicles out of the roadway.
"We want to open at least one lane as quickly as possible," he said.
Bodie Flat is located about 8.5 miles south of Gardnerville.
