Douglas may take over bus service

Carson City residents who want a ride to Douglas County shopping will have to transfer at Clear Creek Road.

Members of the Carson Regional Transportation Commission cut bus service to the Clear Creek and Carson Valley plazas.

On Thursday, Douglas County commissioners could approve construction of a shared bus stop near Costco in Carson City, designed to serve both the Douglas Area Rural Transit and Jump Around Carson bus services.

Douglas County's obligation would not exceed $1,600 and the Reno Transportation Commission would own and maintain the facility.

The proposal comes after a November request by Carson City's transportation commission to Douglas County Commissioners for $16,000, the amount Carson City says it costs to run the Jump Around Carson bus service to Carson Valley Plaza.

Service from city buses will stop on March 1 north of the Carson City-Douglas County border, about a mile from the shopping center, and loop around Snyder Avenue, Silver Sage Drive and Clearview Drive back to Carson Street.

• County officials will start hammering out details with developers concerning infrastructure requirements for Clear Creek, including street, water and sewer projects. The maximum amount of bonded indebtedness, principal only, is not to exceed $20 million, the responsibility for the balance to be borne by future Clear Creek residents.

The project was originally approved for 91 single-family lots, but developer John Serpa said it was not economically feasible considering the amount of infrastructure required. He proposed, and Douglas County commissioners ultimately approved, a larger development with more infrastructure, including Highway 50 access and connection to community sewer and water systems.

Douglas County commissioners subsequently approved a master plan amendment and land use change, allowing the 384-home gated community in the mountains above Jacks Valley.

• Sprinkler system requirements for homes in the Tahoe Basin have been under fire from residents for being too stringent. A new ordinance will be reviewed and could be approved for its first reading at Thursday's meeting of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners.
