Douglas County AARP tax aid volunteers will be available to assist low-income seniors, 10 a.m. March 15, at the Douglas County Senior Center, 2300 Meadow Lane, Gardnerville. The volunteers will be available after the second week in April for homebound seniors.
Some seniors and other low-income wage earners who may not usually file income tax forms, should file a 1040A form if their qualifying income of social security, wage earnings, veteran's or railroad benefits are $3,000 or more in 2007 to be eligible for economic stimulus payments. The government signed into law an economic stimulus payment to be mailed starting in May.
In March, the IRS will be mailing an information packet to recipients of Social Security benefits who did not file a tax return last year. The packet will contain guidance to help claim stimulus payments. Packets include 1040A forms to be filled out and returned to the IRS.
March 15 is the first date tax aid volunteers are available to assist seniors who have received packets. Future meetings to be announced. Seniors should bring information on 2007 Social Security benefits or form 1099 SSA. For information, call the senior center at 783-6455 or 267-7998 for an appointment.
