Snow is expected to fall at a rate of 3 inches an hour in the Valleys of Western Nevada over the next three hours according to the National Weather Service.
Areas above 6,000 feet could hit up to 6 inches an hour.
So far more than 8 inches of snow has fallen in the foothill region of Carson Valley.
Chains or snow tires are required on Highway 395 from the Douglas County line north to Carson City and from Minden south to the California state line. Chains or snow tires are required on Highway 88 south to the state line and over Kingsbury Grade. Interstate 80 remains closed over the Sierra. Highways 50 and 88 are open with mandatory chain controls.
Travelers to the east should be aware that chains or snow tires are being required on Highway 50 to Silver Springs and Highway 95A between Yerington and Fernley.
