A reported gunshot wound in Zephyr Heights Thursday afternoon was a suicide attempt.
Douglas County Sheriff's deputies and Tahoe-Douglas paramedics responded to a home on South Martin Drive at about 1:15 p.m.
Sheriff's Information Officer Jim Halsey said a man told authorities his girlfriend attempted suicide, something she confirmed.
"The female subject appeared to have suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest," Halsey said. "The female subject was still conscious. When questioned, she told deputies that the incident was an attempted suicide on her part."
Halsey said paramedics performed emergency first aid and she was transported by CalStar ambulance helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
"The subject is currently undergoing emergency trauma care at the medical center," Halsey said. "The firearm was recovered at the scene. The investigation is continuing. No foul play is suspected at this time."
