Our 4-H livestock members of the Carson Valley Shepherds traveled to Bishop, Calif., on July 16-20 to compete in showmanship, market and breeding classes. As Fish Springs continues to grow, so do the number of calls for our volunteer fire department. Last year Fish Springs had 90 emergency calls and so far this year there's been 50 calls. This includes medical, vehicle accidents, HazMat, structure fires and wildland fires. Many people moved out here for the seclusion and dark skies. We've certainly got the dark skies, but in case of an emergency, you need to be found quickly.

When I purchased my first home in 1988, I started making gardening blunders. OK, I'm getting older but I sure don't remember it that way when my boys were little and we bought season passes to go to Sea World at least once a month if for no other reason than for the exercise.
Effective July 1, California law now prohibits the use of handheld cell phones while driving in that state. The only way a cell phone may be legally used while driving is with a hands-free device. The fines will increase for every offense, so watch out and remember the law. With this law, California joins four other states in banning handheld phones while driving.
